Facebook YTU Application Screenshot

I’ve just seen in Facebook that one of turk-php.com members, Mustafa Sapcili has developed a new application for Facebook which is for YTU students or alumni.

It’s a simple one but considering the future in Facebook applications, everything needs a start. Keep up the good work, boys!

I saw this week 2 applications I found very interesting.

One is to highlight areas on the map with JavaScript which you might use in your applications as an useful tool. Another one is Hyplet - which is a website to create yourself online id’s or personal cards.

I installed Flock a week ago. I was using Firefox since it was released as beta and I am a big fan of it. I was designing my designs mainly for Firefox when very few developers was using to check the compatibility of their designs to Firefox.

Then I met Flock. The first time was its first beta version and had many bugs. After some time and exactly a week ago I wanted to give one more try to this “social browser” and here are my opinions:

  • I liked it at the first sight, because it uses the same codebase of Firefox.
  • It deserves to be named as “the social browser”. The integration of many social websites like Facebook, Youtube, Flickr etc. makes it unique.
  • It also has many add-ons & extensions like Firefox.
  • It’s also as slow as Firefox. I don’t think there’s much difference about it. (By the way this was the main reason I gave a try to Flock because Firefox is getting slower and slower.)
  • Batch uploads, quick searches etc. - such options are already integrated with it. Very useful.

As I told you above, it is a great browser to use when you are a social networking and browsing freak. But an optimization-maniac like me would not prefer it, too.

Anyway, which one of both you will choose isn’t important, never ever choose Internet Explorer! :)

I couldn’t write anything this week because I was a little cold and needed to rest evenings. I was also in a Kaizen workshop which kept me very busy. I decided to write a wrap-up and also number it with “#1″. That’s a sign I can post in this way this also later again! :)

The first thing is Kaizen. It is a great philosophy and thanks to Toyota which company is the founder of this philosophy and also the “lean manufacturing“. I had a training on Monday for the main aspects of Kaizen and applied them in other 3 days in our production line in the plant.

The second one is I’ve got a present which made me very happy. It is a very soft (I think it’s 100% polyester) football, bought from Ikea. :) Now I can play football at home, too! Hooray!

I’d like to recommend and/or inform you a few websites I met while I was surfing whole week. For instance, I’ve been informed that the famous PHP IDE Komodo has begun to a new project called Open Komodo. It’s kinda freeware Komodo and I couldn’t try it yet but in my opinion it is worth to try it absolutely.

Another useful site is the Cheat Sheet site, where you can find many reference books or “cheat sheets” for various subjects, especially about programming.

The last one is related with web design and I have found it while I was surfing to find a solution to my urgent need. I was trying to find some stylish icons for my new website and found out that there is an open-source project called Tango Desktop Project. You need to look at it. I am sure you’ll need that package someday.Tango Desktop Project Screenshot

I was surfing on the net and I have found two very interesting websites.

One of them is a list of 100 oldest dot com domains. The oldest registered domain name is symbolics.com, which is registered in 1985.
You can find many IT and technology titans’ domain names in the list. (e.g. Intel, Sun, AMD etc.)

Another website has a list of many softwares’ default admin username & password. Maybe, this list will help you somewhere, someday.

This is my first message I post to my blog via ScribeFire.
ScribeFire is a Firefox extension (which is extremely recommended by mozilla add-on section), which you can use to write posts and send it to your blog without interrupting your internet surfing. It’s a cool software and this is my first message. I’ll immediately take a look how it will be shown on my website :)

PC World has published an article for the best products of the year 2007. After taking a look, I’ve found some good softwares / web services.

Another article I’ve found was the most useful websites article. I liked the idea of YouOS and RememberTheMilk, which is also a task management system like Todoist.

You should take a look at them.

As you know, using templates by creating dynamic websites is a very good way for optimization. Since a long time there have been many template engines but one of them was always one step further and was developed in a very professional manner, Smarty.

Yes, I’ve used it also and I think it is a well-coded, detailed, fascinating engine.

Now, I’ve heard a new one and in a very short time it gained many users and is developing very quickly. It is called Blitz. I couldn’t have the time to use it, but I have a new project idea and maybe I can try Blitz as a template engine in this project. The chart at left actually took my interest about using it, too.

However, before using it, I recommend all of my readers to read this blog entry written by Rob Peck.
